Santorini (also known as Thira) is a Greek island in the Cyclades Island chain. Santorini is around 200km from the coast of mainland Greece in the Aegean Sea.
How to get to Santorini?
There are a couple of different options for travelling to Santorini. The easiest is by air, you can fly directly to Thira (Santorini) from London in less than 4 hours. There are also direct connections to lots of other European cities including Madrid, Rome and Prague. If you are travelling to Santorini from the USA then you will need to fly to Athens before taking an internal flight to Thira. The second option is to travel to Santorini by ferry from Athens. There are a number of different ferry companies which take between 5-10 hours to make the journey. Ferry’s run every day of the year and you can find out the latest information and book on the Ferry hopper site.
Why have a Santorini wedding?
Santorini is one of the most desirable and exclusive islands in Greece, if not the whole of Europe. Think turquoise waters surrounding an island of red and black sandy beaches, tall cliffs, with whitewashed buildings carved straight into the rock. And of course, the blue coloured domes dotted around the island that are one of the symbols of Santorini. The summer weather is beautiful, Santorini is famed for its world-class sunsets and the food is awesome (even for the vegetarians). Having a wedding in Santorini means stunning backdrops, sunshine, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe to your wedding day.
This summer we headed to Santorini for a wedding shoot which we hope will inspire you in planning your Santorini wedding.
Santorini wedding venues
Santorini has many different options when it comes to wedding venues and we won’t go through all of the options in this article, but we will tell you about the venue that we used for our shoot- the Grace Hotel of the Auberge Resorts Collection.
The Grace hotel describes itself as ‘a picturesque sanctuary above the Aegean Sea’ – and we certainly agree. This exclusive hotel sits high above the Caldera on the edge of the village of Imerovigli. It’s whitewashed walls, infinity pool, and private suites feel luxurious, relaxing and the perfect place for a Santorini elopement.
Santorini elopement shoot
The planning and styling of the shoot was masterminded by the amazing Valentina of The Stars Inside, and the details were just incredible. Hiring a stylist for your wedding can really take it to the next level and we recommend considering a stylist like Valentina if you want to wow at your Santorini elopement.
Our couple Paula and Daniel started the day in the pool outside their private suite, enjoying the views and each other. Traditionally couples don’t see each other before their ceremony but there’s no reason you can’t. For a destination wedding, it’s much more common for couples to spend the morning doing something fun together before getting ready for your afternoon ceremony.
Once they were ready it was time for a ceremony overlooking the Aegean Sea in front of a super cool modern take of a church arch.
Weddings & Whimsy Santorini also provided props for the intimate table for eight, and are one of our top recommended vendors in Santorini for your wedding prop and decoration needs. They have so many amazing options to make your day unique.
The stunning wedding stationery created by Paige N Co was influenced by the blue waters surrounding the island.
As the sun started to go down we headed down the many, many steps (everywhere in Santorini involves steps) to a little chapel overlooking the water. Paul and Daniel, who met at a Salsa class, danced in the golden sunset light- it was magical.
Before the sun finally set they continued down to the cliff and walked out over the rocks to watch the sunset together and celebrated with some sparklers, which we, of course, took back to the hotel to dispose of, as it’s so important to Leave No Trace from your wedding.
Santorini wedding in Oia
Oia is one of the most popular towns on Santorini, as it gets incredible sunsets and is home to a number of the cobalt-blue domed churches that everyone loves. The day after our wedding shoot, we headed to Oia early in the morning to have the place to ourselves as we explored all of the beautiful sites.
After a couple of hours, we headed down to the coast and Daniel and Paula took a dip in the sea to finish off their wedding shoot.
It was a great way to finish a wonderful two days together creating content that we will be dreaming of for years to come.
Santorini lived up to our expectations of being an amazing place for a wedding and we hoped this article inspired you too. If you have any questions or like the article then let us know! You can contact us here.
